I read the page you have rewritten too many times to see straight, and I tell you what actually lands. What holds. What wobbles. Where a stranger gets lost. The one move I would make.
Proof of work. One pass, on a famous opening line. Public domain, so nobody's feelings are at stake.
The line: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
What it is doing: three claims stacked, each less true than the last. "Universally acknowledged" is opinion wearing a crown. "In possession of a good fortune" is the one fact, buried mid-sentence. "Must be in want of a wife" is desire dressed as arithmetic. The sentence is a con; the whole novel is the narrator proving it wrong, quietly. That is the engine, not decoration.
Warning to its writer: the trick survives only while the deadpan holds. One wink from the narrator and irony collapses into comedy. Austen never breaks it. That discipline is the joke.
What I would fight for: the comma after "acknowledged". The pause is where the doubt leaks in, and the doubt is the whole book.
